The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that efforts to regulate lead paint in commercial and public buildings will be delayed until July 1, 2015. The EPA was to propose these rules for commercial buildings by June, 2012. The purpose was to reduce possible lead paint hazards that might arise during renovation of the outside of commercial or public buildings.  Due in part to pressure from NAR and a broad coalition of real estate industry stakeholders, they will be delayed for at least three years.  Any final rule with a regulatory impact on real estate is not expected for well over four years — until December 31, 2016.  NAR will continue working with EPA, Congress and its real estate organization partners to prepare our response to any federal regulatory actions in this area.
